MRFF is an hate organization - just check beneath the surface

Since I just have a tendency to just put junk here I thought about just discontinuing this page.  BUT when I read this story this morning I thought I was going to throw up.  It really made me that sick.

In my opinion, I thought the members of the KKK were folks that had no problem spreading their hate filled program but they don't even compare to this hate filled organization, Military Religious Freedom Foundation.  I'm surprised the Southern Poverty Law Center does not list them.

Absolutely disgusting.  Just check what they are trying to do to an Air Force Chaplain.  Makes me sick to my stomach.

http://m.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2013/07/law-and-justice-and-george-zimmerman/277772/

In the next few hours and days you'll likely be inundated with analysis and commentary and solemn expressions of outrage or joy about what the acquittal of George Zimmerman means -- to the nation, to its rule of law, to its politics, to its racial divide, to its deadly obsession with guns, to Florida's ALEC-infused justice system, and to probably 100 other things I can't list off the top of my head. This is what happens when a verdict comes down in a high-profile criminal trial -- when life or liberty are on the line and the country is split, and angrily so, upon the wisdom and the justice of the outcome.
To me, on its most basic level, the startling Zimmerman verdict -- and the case and trial that preceded it -- is above all a blunt reminder of the limitations of our justice system. Criminal trials are not searches for the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. They never have been. Our rules of evidence and the Bill of Rights preclude it. Our trials are instead tests of only that limited evidence a judge declares fit to be shared with jurors, who in turn are then admonished daily, hourly even, not to look beyond the corners of what they've seen or heard in court.
Trials like the one we've all just witnessed in Florida can therefore never fully answer the larger societal questions they pose. They can never act as moral surrogates to resolve the national debates they trigger. In the end, they teach only what each of us as students are predisposed to learn. They provide no closure, not to the families or anyone else, even as they represent the close of one phase of the rest of the lives of the people involved. They are tiny slivers of the truth of the matter, the perspective as narrow as if you were staring at the horizon with blinders on, capable only of seeing what was not intentionally blocked from view.
Of course the deadly meeting last year between Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman had at its core a racial element. Of course its tragic result reminds us that the nation, in ways too many of our leaders refuse to acknowledge, is still riven by race. The story of Martin and Zimmerman is the story of crime and punishment in America, and of racial disparities in capital sentencing, and in marijuana prosecutions, and in countless other things. But it wasn't Judge Debra Nelson's job to conduct a seminar on race relations in 2013. It wasn't her job to help America bridge its racial divide. It was her job to give Zimmerman a fair trial. And she did.
So the murder trial of George Zimmerman did not allow jurors to deliberate over the fairness of Florida's outlandishly broad self-defense laws. It did not allow them debate the virtues of the state's liberal gun laws or its evident tolerance for vigilantes (which we now politely call "neighborhood watch"). It did not permit them to delve into the racial profiling that Zimmerman may have engaged in or into the misconduct and mischief that Martin may have engaged in long before he took that fatal trip to the store for candy. These factors, these elements, part of the more complete picture of this tragedy, were off-limits to the ultimate decision-makers.
What the verdict says, to the astonishment of tens of millions of us, is that you can go looking for trouble in Florida, with a gun and a great deal of racial bias, and you can find that trouble, and you can act upon that trouble in a way that leaves a young man dead, and none of it guarantees that you will be convicted of a crime. But this curious result says as much about Florida's judicial and legislative sensibilities as it does about Zimmerman's conduct that night. This verdict would not have occurred in every state. It might not even have occurred in any other state. But it occurred here, a tragic confluence that leaves a young man's untimely death unrequited under state law. Don't like it? Lobby to change Florida's laws.
If we understand and accept these legal limitations -- and perhaps only if we do -- the result here makes sense. Purely as a matter of law, you could say, it makes perfect sense. Florida's material, admissible, relevant proof against Zimmerman was not strong enough to overcome the burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. The eye-witnesses (and ear-witnesses) did not present a uniformly compelling case against the defendant. The police witnesses, normally chalk for prosecutors, did not help as much as they typically do. Nor was there compelling physical evidence establishing that Zimmerman had murderous intent and was not acting in self-defense.
The case was "not about standing your ground; it was about staying in your car," the prosecutor cogently said during closing argument. But in the end, under state law favorable to men like the defendant -- that is, favorable to zealots willing to take the law into their own hands -- Zimmerman's series of deplorable choices that night did not amount to murderous intent or even the much more timid manslaughter. The defense here wisely understood that and was able consistently, methodically, to remind jurors that prosecutors had not adequately explained (or proved) how exactly the altercation started and how precisely it progressed.
Without a confession, without video proof, without a definitive eyewitness, without compelling scientific evidence, prosecutors needed to sell jurors cold on the idea of Zimmerman as the hunter and Martin as the hunted. But when the fated pair came together that night, in those fleeting moments before the fatal shot, the distinctions between predator and prey became jumbled. And prosecutors were never able to make it clear enough again to meet their burden of proof. That's the story of this trial. That explains this result. That's why some will believe to their own dying day that George Zimmerman has just gotten away with murder.
Maybe yes and maybe no. Technically speaking, the fact that Zimmerman now has been found not guilty under Florida law of the crimes of second-degree murder and manslaughter does not necessarily exonerate him in the world beyond the court. It does not mean that he is not culpable. This is and can never be a case where the defendant can proudly proclaim his innocence at some later date. But today's verdict, the unanimous result of six women who worked through their longest day to deliver the word, does mean that after 18 tortuous months, this tragic story now can move on to whatever comes next.
And what comes next, surely, is a wrongful death civil action for money damages brought against Zimmerman by the Martin family. That means another case, and perhaps another trial, with evidentiary rules that are more relaxed than the ones we've just seen. And that means that a few years from now, after Martin v. Zimmerman is concluded, we'll likely know more about what happened that night than we do today. That's the good news. The bad news is that no matter how many times Zimmerman is hauled into court, we will never know the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about what happened that terrible night.

18 and Counting: Plum Ambassador Posts Go to Obama Campaign Bundlers

July 10, 2013 - 4:17 AM
ambassadorPresident Obama has  nominated Matthew Barzun, who served as his campaign finance chairman in 2008 and 2012, as ambassador to the United Kingdom. (AP Photo, File)
(CNSNews.com) – President Obama on Tuesday nominated two major campaign bundlers to two of the most prized ambassadorships available anywhere – London and Rome – part of a pattern that has seen him reward at least 18 top fundraisers with plum diplomatic positions since 2009.
The White House said the post of ambassador to the United Kingdom will go, subject to confirmation, to Matthew Barzun, an Internet pioneer and investor who served as the Obama campaign finance chairman in 2008, as ambassador to Sweden from 2009-2011, and then again as finance chairman for the president’s 2012 campaign.
The ambassadorship to Italy will go to John R. Phillips, a Washington lawyer who chairs the president’s commission that selects candidates to be White House fellows. Phillips is the husband of Linda Douglass, a former network journalist who served as communications director for the Obama White House’s Office of Health Reform.
According to the non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics, Barzun bundled at least $500,000 for the Obama campaign in 2008 and at least $500,000 again in 2012; Phillips bundled at least $500,000 for Obama in 2012 and between $200,000 and $500,000 in 2008.
Barzun is in line to take up the post vacated by Louis Susman, a retired Chicago investment banker who bundled between $200,000 and $500,000 for Obama in 2008, before being nominated as ambassador to the U.K. the following May.
Barzun and Phillips are the latest in a string of Obama bundlers to be nominated to ambassadorial posts.
Already serving are the ambassadors to Belize (bundled $100,000-$200,000 for the Obama campaign in 2008), Canada ($50,000-$100,000), Czech Republic ($200,000-$500,000), Finland ($500,000+), France ($500,000+), Japan ($500,000+) and Norway ($200,000-$500,000).
Joining them are the current U.S. ambassadors to the European Union in Brussels, and to the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), based in Jakarta, both of whom bundled at least $500,000 each for the Obama campaign in 2008.
In addition, Obama has nominated another seven campaign bundlers to ambassador positions, in some cases replacing yet other bundlers who got the posts during his first term (including one who drew criticism during Obama’s re-election campaign with comments about anti-Semitism and Israel.)
Awaiting confirmation are Obama’s nominees as ambassador to Berlin (John Emerson, $100,000-$200,000), Brussels (Denise Bauer, $200,000- $500,000), Madrid (James Costos, $500,000+), Santo Domingo (James "Wally" Brewster, $500,000+), Singapore (Kirk Wagar, $500,000+), Vienna (Alexa Wesner, $200,000-$500,000) and the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva (Keith Harper, $500,000+).
Finally, Obama has nominated as ambassador to Denmark Rufus Gifford – not a campaign bundler, but his 2012 campaign finance director.
According to the American Foreign Service Association (AFSA), giving ambassadorships to political appointees has been a common practice for presidents of both parties in recent decades.
AFSA says 187 (67.8 percent) of Obama’s ambassadorial nominations to date have been career diplomats, compared to 89 (32.2 percent) who have been political appointees.
AFSA figures for previous presidents are: George W. Bush – 30 percent political appointees; Clinton – 27.82 percent; George H.W. Bush – 31.30 percent; and Carter – 26.73 percent. It did not have figures available for President Reagan.
Political appointees tend most often to get coveted Western European and Caribbean stations, where 72 percent of all ambassador posts since 1960 have gone to them.
By contrast, only 14 percent of posts in Africa and the Middle East have gone to political appointees since 1960, and none to posts in Central Asia.
It’s a situation AFSA opposes.
“The United States is alone in this practice; no other major democracy routinely appoints non-diplomats to serve as envoys to other countries,” it says in a statement on its website.
“The appointment of non-career individuals, however accomplished in their own field, to lead America’s important diplomatic missions abroad should be exceptional and circumscribed, not the routine practice it has become over the last three decades.”
The Foreign Service Act of 1980 states that “positions as chief of mission should normally be accorded to career members of the Service.”
The legislation adds that ambassadorial nominees “should possess clearly demonstrated competence to perform the duties of a chief of mission, including, to a maximum extent practicable, useful knowledge of the principal language or dialect of the country in which the individual is to serve, and knowledge and understanding of the history, the culture, the economic and political institutions, and the interests of that country and its people.”
And, it says, “Contributions to political campaigns should not be a factor in the appointment of an individual as a chief of mission.”

Here - - you want a tip?

Too bad so sad... Maybe someone will spit in their garbage ... Oh wait . they no longer work there.. retired before they got fired.

NEW YORK (UPI) -- The city Conflict of Interest Board in New York fined a pair of sanitation workers $2,000 each for a $10 tip they received for hauling off a big pile of trash.
The board ruled Monday to fine Robert Bracone, a 26-year veteran of the department, and Rene Torres, a 23-year veteran, after hearing of a Dec. 12, 2011, incident at a three-story building in Queens' Corona neighborhood, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.

The board said a resident placed trash including five bags of household garbage, two bags of recyclables, two bundles of wood, a rug and two wooden boards at the side of the curb and Torres then asked about $20 he said the resident's girlfriend had promised them as a tip.

"The resident informed us that he had only $10. Bracone and I then removed all the waste, after which the resident gave Bracone and me five dollars each," Torres told the board.

Torres and Bracone admitted to soliciting gratuities, a violation of a policy against city employees using their jobs to "to obtain a personal benefit," as well as a policy banning a public servant from receiving compensation except from the city for performing any official duty.

The men, who retired while the investigation was ongoing, were each fined $2,000.

DOMA and DoD am ashamed

I so don't care what you might think of me at this moment.........

I guess that I should be happy that I am close to the end of my life.  I have seen the United States change so dramatically since I turned 18 it is hard to believe. Although there have been a lot of changes for the good some are just flat out disgusting.  I wonder if this is how my grand parents felt when they saw the world changing in front of them.

I truly believe in "live and let live" but I despise having "things" jammed down my throat.  With gay marriage, transgenderism, pedophilia, to name just  a few, being celebrated everywhere, it is probably good that the old guard is slowly fading away.

When the media deliberately blows up a story beyond all proportion (Paula Dean) and hides the story of using the word "retard" because of whatever reason - Bill Maher Calls Sarah Palin’s Special Needs Child “Retarded”

To call it a marriage when 2 gays want to live together makes my marriage of almost 40 years a mockery.

I also never thought I would ever see this type of headline which makes me ashamed that I spent almost 35 years working for DoD. Pentagon celebrates gay troops

Company Sells Pork-Laced Bullets To Fight Islamic Terrorists

Dalton Gardens, Idaho (CBS SEATTLE) – An Idaho ammunition manufacturer has developed a new line of pork-laced bullets they hope will fight against Islamic terrorists – and keep them from going to heaven.

South Fork Industries of Dalton Gardens, Idaho, took traditional bullets and coated them in pork-infused paint to make them “haram,” or unclean, under Islamic law. The company’s website labels the “Jihawg Ammo” bullets as “Peace Through Pork” and a “peaceful and natural deterrent to radical Islam.”

“With Jihawg Ammo, you don’t just kill an Islamist terrorist, you also send him to hell. That should give would-be martyrs something to think about before they launch an attack. If it ever becomes necessary to defend yourself and those around you our ammo works on two levels,” the company said in a press release earlier this month.

The pink and black box bills the bullets as “Freedom’s first choice in defensive ammunition,” and says, “There’s Pig in the Paint.” There’s a related line of gear that feature slogans like “Put Some Ham in MoHAMed” and a target poster that says “Give Em a Spankin with some Bacon.”

But some religious experts debate the theory that the bullets would prevent a Muslim from attaining salvation should they be shot with the pork-laced ammunition.

“There is no penalty for coming into contact with pork given by the Quran,’ said Shannon Dunn, assistant professor of religious studies at Gonzaga University, in an interview with Religion News Service. “To my knowledge, Muslims, especially unknowingly, would not be banned from heaven for eating or getting hit by pork. There are some interpreters who suggest that Muslims should eat pork than starve, if faced with that alternative.”
The “Jihawg Ammo” Facebook page has amassed nearly 6,000 likes and hundreds of comments discussing the controversial ammunition.

They travel to Mexico and begin to set up on a square in a small town.

Alice and Frank are bungee-jumping one day. Alice says to Frank, "You know, we could make a lot of money running our own bungee-jumping service in Mexico.

Frank thinks this is a great idea. So they pool their money and buy everything they'll need: a tower, an elastic cord, insurance, etc.

As they are constructing the tower, a crowd begins to assemble. Slowly, more and more people gather to watch them at work.

When they finish, there's such a crowd they think it would be a good idea to give a demonstration.

So, Alice jumps. She bounces at the end of the cord, but when she comes back up, Frank notices that she has a few cuts and scratches.

Unfortunately, Frank isn't able to catch her and she falls again, bounces, and comes back up again. This time, she is bruised and bleeding.

Again, Frank misses her. Alice falls again and bounces back up. This time she comes back pretty messed up; she has a couple of broken bones and is almost unconscious.

Luckily, Frank finally catches her this time and says, "What happened? Was the cord too long?"

Barely able to speak, Alice gasps, "No, the bungee cord was fine; it was the crowd. What in the world is a pinata?

Pick up the sleeping meds at Walmart a while ago.  I don't know it for a fact but I sense the Coors Bypass Walmart pharmacy is starting to come apart at the seams.  Ever since Susie, the   Pharmacist left , orders are getting lost, prescriptions called in disappear, etc.  My renewal for Zolpidem was instituted and cancelled at least 4 times.  Finally, today, I spoke with a human and told her the story.  Go figure it (the scrip) was waiting for someone to pick it up.  Oh well

Thought this story was cute.

Diver finds 97-year-old message in bottle

DETROIT (UPI) -- A diver in Michigan located a message in a bottle from two young women sent nearly 100 years ago, historians said.

Selina Pramstaller and Tillie Esper, who lived in Detroit in 1915, wrote a simple note while visiting Tashmoo Park in Harsens Island, a popular recreation destination for Detroit residents at the time.

Their message, in neat cursive writing: "Having a good time at Tashmoo."

They put the note, written on the back of a receipt that included their names and addresses, in a glass bottle with a cork and tossed it the St. Clair River where, 97 years later, Dave Leander went diving. He spotted the bottle sticking out from under about 6 inches of silt and brought it to the surface, the Detroit Free Press said Tuesday.

Leander and his wife, Pam, researched the writers and the area, which is where the old Tashmoo ferry used to dock. An amusement park, bathhouse and public beach were favorite summertime spots for many Detroit residents until the park was closed in 1951.

Leander has loaned the bottle and its message to the Harsens Island St. Clair Flats Historical Society, which is coincidentally holding Tashmoo Days, a celebration of the island's heyday, next month.

The group went on to research the note's writers. Pramstaller married and had a child before divorcing and becoming a nurse while caring for her widowed father in the 1940s. Esper lived to the age of 91 and had nine children, eventually moving to Dearborn, Mich., the research showed.

Almost like my family......... except they don't wear a mask

Alleged home invasion thief recognized as grandson

ALBUQUERQUE (UPI) -- Albuquerque police said they captured an alleged masked intruder when he was recognized by the homeowner, his grandmother.

Investigators said the victim told officers a man wearing a purple bandanna over his face broke into her home through the back early Friday and she immediately suspected the man of being her grandson, Thomas Clark, 22, KRQE-TV, Albuquerque, reported Monday.

The woman said the intruder grabbed her and she tore off his bandanna during the struggle, revealing her grandson's face.

Clark, who left with the woman's purse, was arrested about 4 hours later at his parents' home. He told police he robbed his grandmother because two of his friends convinced him it was a good way to get money for a casino trip.

The victim, who told police Clark broke into her home and stole a TV last year, said she was recovering from cuts and bruises to her wrist and neck.

Clark was arraigned on felony charges Saturday and ordered held in lieu of $15,000 bail.

Ex NYPD detective wants to open Brooklyn bikini bar

NEW YORK (UPI) -- A former New York City police detective said he wants to open a bikini bar near the newly opened Barclays Center to attract sports fans.

Michael Bell, a retired narcotics detective, said the as-yet-unnamed cabaret would feature poll dancing, cocktail service and a full bar. Female employees would be required to wear bikinis but there would not be any nudity.

"Imagine Hooters but upscale and with alcohol," he told the New York Post.

Bell said his experience as a police officer would keep the bar classy. He added he hoped Brooklyn Nets players and fans who attend games at the Barclays Center would stop in for some post-game entertainment.

Bell has not yet received the necessary permits and is still scouting a location, the Post said.

Man with cocaine between toes says the drugs aren't his

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (UPI) -- A Florida man who was arrested with drugs allegedly hidden between his toes says the drug, which he identified as cocaine, was not his.

Martin Perez, 33, was arrested early June 2 on an aggravated battery charge, tcpalm.com reported.

When he arrived at the St. Lucie County jail in Fort Pierce, Perez was asked if he had any weapons or drugs on him, to which he said no. However, deputies later found a bag of white powder hidden between Perez's toes, officials said.

Perez said the powder was cocaine, but said it wasn't his.

Deputies didn't buy Perez's story, though, and charged him with cocaine possession and smuggling contraband into detention facility.

I know I have not said anything prior to this but 10 or 11 days ago I stopped taking my Loperamide and Lomotil prescriptions.  As most SBS'rs know these help slow down motility and I was taking 8 Loperamide and 8 Lomotil every day for a little over 2 1/2 years. And as one would also know this is just about as high a dosage that is recommended.

It actually started because I forgot to renew the prescription and ended up not having any for a few days.  I also noticed that my motility had not changed and the amount  diarrhea I was not having.  Got me to thinking that maybe my small intestine has adapted by increasing its girth and maybe I don't have to take so much.  More than likely the doctor's would be outraged at my
presumptiveness.  To be honest what the hell do they really know about my condition?  I can read and interpret as well as them plus I have a heck of a lot more invested in myself...

Going to continue to not take any until Sunday to see if anything else develops. Then I am going to restart using the drugs but at half the dosage and see what happens.

One additional thing I should mention.  I am still taking the codeine sulphate to slow motility.

How much truth do think is in the following story?

A veteran member of the U.S. Army Band said he is facing retribution and punishment from the military for having anti-Obama bumper stickers on his car, reading books written by conservative authors like Mark Levin and David Limbaugh, and serving Chick-fil-A sandwiches at his promotion party.

Master Sgt. Nathan Sommers, a 25-year Army veteran and conservative Christian based at Fort Myer in Washington, believes his outspoken opposition to gay marriage prompted higher-ups to take a closer look at his beliefs. The recipient of an Army Commendation Medal and a soloist at the funeral of former First Lady Betty Ford, Sommers said his core beliefs are enough to mark a soldier for persecution in today’s military.
“It seems like with the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell – that the Christians have been the ones who’ve had to go underground and in the closet – for fear of retaliation and reprisals,” Sommers told Fox News. “Christians feel like they can’t be forthright with their faith. They have to hide.”
Ret. Navy Commander John Bennett Wells is representing the master sergeant. He said there is no doubt in his mind that the U.S. military is discriminating against Christians – and specifically his client.
“There’s no question about it,“ Wells told Fox News. “Because he is religious, because he feels that homosexual conduct is wrong for religious reasons, he is basically being persecuted.”
Lt. Col. Justin Platt, an Army spokesman at the Pentagon released a statement to Fox News noting that the military branch cannot comment on ongoing investigations or administrative actions.
“With respect to the political activities, soldiers are expected to carry out their obligations as citizens in accordance with applicable regulations,” Platt said.
Army documents obtained by Fox News indicate Sommers was told that his actions bordered on being disrespectful to President Obama and the “slightest inference of disrespect towards superiors can have a demoralizing effect on the unit.”
“You should strive to express your opinion while being aware of the overall ramifications of your statements,” the Army noted.
Sommers’ troubles began last April when he was told to remove pro-Republican, anti-Obama bumper stickers that were on his privately owned car.
The stickers read: “Political Dissent is NOT Racism,” “NOBAMA,” NOPE2012” and “The Road to Bankruptcy is Paved with Ass-Fault.” That sticker included the image of a donkey.
His superior officer told the solider that the bumper stickers were creating “unnecessary workplace tension.”
“The types of stickers on your car were creating an atmosphere detrimental to morale and were creating unnecessary workplace tension,” the officer wrote in an Army document obtained by Fox News. “A Soldier must balance their personal feelings with the mission of the U.S. Army. Even the slightest inference of disrespect towards superiors can have a demoralizing effect on the unit.”
Attorney Wells said once he got involved, the military backed off of filing a formal reprimand.
“He’s allowed to have those bumper stickers on his car,” he said. “The DoD regulation allows it. There was nothing obscene about it.”
During the summer months, Sommers came under fire for reading the works of Mark Levin, Sean Hannity and David Limbaugh.
Sommers was reading Limbaugh’s “The Great Destroyer” backstage at a U.S. Army Band concert at the U.S. Capitol. A superior officer told him that he was causing “unit disruption” and was offending other soldiers.
“I wasn’t reading aloud,” he said. “I was just reading privately to myself. I was told they were frowning on that and they warned me that I should not be reading literature like that backstage because it was offensive.”
In another episode, he had been caught backstage reading a copy of Levin’s “Ameritopia: The Unmaking of America.”
Sommers said he was told to refrain from reading the book “while in uniform or within sight of anyone from the band.”
“This is the first time since (my superior officer) indicated I had offended others with my choice of reading material, that I was officially counseled about it,” he said. “The statement took my breath away. I was speechless.”
In spite of those incidents, the Army promoted the soldier in September to the rank of master sergeant. But the promotion would also mark the launch of an effort by the military to punish the soldier.
His promotion coincided with a controversy surrounding Chick-fil-A. The company’s president told a reporter that he was “guilty as charged” when it came to supporting traditional marriage. Gay rights activists pounced- calling for a boycott of the Christian-owned company. And some Democratic officials vowed to block Chick-fil-A from opening restaurants in their cities.
In response to that, Fox News Channel host Mike Huckabee launched a national Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day to rally support for the restaurant chain.
“I was inspired by Gov. Huckabee’s appreciation day,” Sommers told Fox News. “And since I wasn’t able to participate in the event, I decided to serve Chick-fil-A at my promotion party.”
It’s a long-standing tradition within the U.S. Army Band for promoted soldiers to host a party for their fellow troops. So the soldier decided to have Chick-fil-A cater the meal.
“My family likes Chick-fil-A and we like what they stand for,” he said. “I can make a statement and at least express a religious point of view at my promotion party – theoretically without any fear of reprisal.”
The soldier also tweeted about the party: “In honor of DADT repeal, and Obama/Holder’s refusal to enforce DOMA act, I’m serving Chick-fil-A at my MSG promo reception for Army today.”
He also tweeted to radio host Mark Levin: “@Marklevinshow ‘luv ya, Mark! Fellow Virginian & MSG, Army. Being promoted today, serving Chick-fil-A @ reception in honor of DADT repeal.”
Both tweets were cited in an official military document.
“As a Soldier you must be cognizant of the fact that your statements can be perceived by the general public and other service members to be of a nature bordering on disrespect to the President of the United States,” the document stated.
Sommers said he paid for the party with personal money, not government funds.
“I had no idea a Chick-fil-A sandwich would get me in trouble,” he said.
He was later summoned by a superior officer, who the soldier said is openly gay, and was told that unidentified individuals were offended by the tweets and some considered them to be racist.
Sommers was reprimanded, threatened with judicial action and given a bad efficiency report. An investigation was also launched.
“It’s an obvious attempt to set him up and force him out of the military,” Wells said. “They recently did an NCO evaluation that effectively torpedoed his chance at promotion and he could be forced out of the Army.”
During the course of their investigation, the military unearthed a tweet from 2010 that included a derogatory word for homosexuals. The soldier admitted that he had retweeted someone else’s original tweet.
“Lordy, Lordy, it’s faggot Tuesday. The lefty loons and Obamabots are out in full force,” the retweet read.
The soldier was hauled in to explain himself before a superior officer.
“He explained to me that homosexual Soldiers were now afraid of me,” Sommers said. “He showed me a letter from an Army Band colleague that demanded that I publicly apologize (to) the band for my statements and that I should be removed from positions of leadership and influence.”
Sommers admitted the retweet was a case of bad judgment on his part, but he said he believes that a group of homosexual soldiers are on a witch hunt and they were “attempting to dig up any negative information they could in order to silence me or ruin my career.”
Attorney Wells said Sommers is taking a “courageous course.”
“He’s not going to abandon his beliefs,” he said. “It would be easy for him to stand up and say, ‘Oh, I’ve seen the light. Yes, I was wrong – and I’m going to do everything I can to embrace the political correctness and all will be forgiven.’”
But Wells said the soldier’s “conscience won’t allow him to do that.”
Sommers said he has worked alongside gay soldiers for quite some time and does not have a problem serving with them.
“My point is everybody has a right,” he said. “Christians also have a right to express their points of view and that’s what’s being squelched here. There is no tolerance or dissent from the military’s point of view.”
The soldier fears that the military is becoming less tolerant.
“Ironically, the liberals are preaching tolerance,” he said. “They are saying, ‘We can tolerate you.’ But if you have a certain belief that doesn’t align with what the military wants you to believe – particularly religious beliefs – you’re no longer welcome in the U.S. military.”
Attorney Wells said his client is not going down without a fight – and they are vowing to file a federal lawsuit and reach out to Congress if necessary.
Ron Crews, executive director of the Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty said stories like this are becoming commonplace in the military post-repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.
“These stories are the ones that have not been told – about some of the more subtle ramifications of the repeal of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy,” he said.
One service member received a severe reprimand for expressing his faith’s religious position about homosexuality in a personal religious blog.
A chaplain was relieved of his command over a military chapel because he could not allow same-sex weddings to take place in the chapel.
And a chaplain who asked senior military officers whether religious liberty would be protected in the wake of the repeal of the law against open homosexual behavior in the military was told to “get in line” or resign.
Crews said they are sharing these stories to let other service members know there is a place to get help. He said Chaplain Alliance publishes a religious liberty palm card – explaining constitutionally protected liberties to service members.
“If you believe your religious liberties have been violated, here’s what you can do,” he said. “We will see that you get the help that you need.”
And what about Sommers?
“We’re going to stand with this soldier who did nothing wrong,” Crews said. “There is nothing wrong in saying he wants to celebrate DOMA – which happens to be federal law.
UPDATE: After this story was published, the Military District of Washington issued the following statement:
A public affairs spokesperson said Sommers did have the right to display a political sticker on his private vehicle.
“Accordingly, the Soldier was not prohibited from displaying a political bumper sticker.  Instead, the Soldier’s supervisor discussed the appropriateness of the bumper stickers with him and potential perceptions of others in light of the regulatory guidance.”
“The Soldier is not, and never has been, “facing retribution and punishment from the military for having anti-Obama bumper stickers on his car, reading books written by conservative authors like Mark Levin and David Limbaugh, and serving Chick-fil-A sandwiches at his promotion party,” the spokesperson added.

Taco Bell investigating shell licking employee picture

IRVINE, Calif. (UPI) -- Fast food chain Taco Bell, based in California, said it is investigating an online photo that appears to show an employee licking a stack of taco shells.

A spokesman for the eatery said officials believe the photo to be a prank that did not result in any customers receiving contaminated food, but an investigation is being carried out, ABC News reported Tuesday.

The photo was posted Sunday to Taco Bell's Facebook page.

"Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and team members, and we have strict food handling procedures and zero tolerance for any violations. When we learned of the situation we immediately contacted this restaurant's leadership and although we believe it is a prank and the food was not served to customers, we are conducting a full-scale investigation and will be taking swift action against those involved," the company said in a statement Monday.

Thief arrested for 77th time in subway candy caper

CHICAGO (UPI) -- A Chicago parolee arrested more than 70 times found out stealing candy isn't always as easy as stealing candy from a baby, officials said.

Police said Amarri C. Bowens, 22, was arrested for the 77th time Saturday morning when he allegedly stole a box of Starburst candy from a convenience store at the Addison Red Line station in Wrigleyville. The candy, which police recovered, is worth $29.89. For its alleged theft, Bowens was jailed in lieu of $30,000 bail. The candy theft charge is a felony because it violates Bowens' parole, the Chicago Tribune said.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office said Bowens was sentenced to three years in prison but was let out on parole in December 2012 after serving about 18 months.

Bowens is due in court Friday following his latest arrest.
